How SR-22 works in Utah
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Utah Driver License Division (DLD) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Utah usually requires one after a conviction for driving without insurance, an accident with an uninsured vehicle registered to you, or a court order for damages from an uninsured accident, and you typically keep it for 3 years from the conviction date.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with DLD for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies DLD and your license can be suspended for the rest of the 3 years
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Utah minimum car insurance
For policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2025, Utah requires at least $30,000 for injuries per person, $65,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, plus $3,000 of personal injury protection (PIP). Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Utah
If you don't own a car, Utah law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.
