How SR-22 works in Nevada
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Nevada usually requires one after a DUI or other license revocation, a conviction for driving without insurance, or an insurance lapse of 91 days or more on a vehicle registered to you, and you typically keep it for 3 years from the date your license or registration is reinstated.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Nevada DMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies the DMV, which can suspend your license and registrations, and you may have to start the 3 years over
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Nevada minimum car insurance
Nevada requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage. These limits have been in place since July 1, 2018. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits and come from a company licensed to sell insurance in Nevada.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Nevada
If you don't own a car, Nevada law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Nevada SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Nevada?
The Nevada DMV usually requires one after a DUI or other license revocation, a conviction for driving without insurance, or an insurance lapse of 91 days or more on a vehicle registered to you. A third lapse within five years also brings an SR-22, even a short one. If you aren't sure, ask the DMV or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Nevada?
Typically 3 years from the date your license or registration is reinstated, not from the date of the offense. If the policy cancels during that time, you may have to start the 3 years over.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Nevada?
Your insurer has to tell the DMV before the policy ends, and the DMV can suspend your license and the registrations of every vehicle in your name. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Nevada without a car?
Yes. Nevada law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
