How SR-22 works in Alaska
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Alaska usually requires one before you get your license back after a suspension or revocation, such as for a DUI, refusing a breath test, reckless driving, driving while suspended, a points suspension or a crash without insurance. For most offenses you keep it for 3 years from the day the revocation ends. After a DUI or refusal it's 5 years for a first offense and longer after that.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Alaska DMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it's canceled or lapses, your insurer tells the DMV and your license can be suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Alaska minimum car insurance
Alaska requires at least $50,000 for injuries per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 50/100/25. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Alaska
If you don't own a car, Alaska law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Alaska SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Alaska?
The Alaska DMV usually requires one before it gives back a license that was suspended or revoked, for example after a DUI, refusing a breath test, reckless driving, driving while suspended, a points suspension or a crash without insurance. If you aren't sure, ask the Alaska DMV or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Alaska?
For most offenses, 3 years from the day the revocation ends. After a DUI or refusal conviction it's 5 years for a first offense, 10 years for a second, 20 years for a third and for life after a fourth. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask the Alaska DMV.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Alaska?
Your insurer has to tell the DMV when the policy is canceled or lapses, and the policy can't end until at least 10 days after that notice. The DMV can then suspend your license until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Alaska without a car?
Yes. Alaska law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
