How SR-22 works in Arizona
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files electronically with the Arizona Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Arizona usually requires one after a DUI suspension or revocation, refusing an alcohol or drug test, a suspension for driving without insurance, or an unpaid court judgment from a crash, and you typically keep it for 3 years from the date your suspension or revocation ends.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with MVD electronically for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it cancels or lapses, your insurer notifies MVD, which can suspend your license until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Arizona minimum car insurance
Arizona requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage. These limits apply to policies issued or renewed since July 1, 2020. Before that, the minimums were $15,000, $30,000 and $10,000. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits and come from a company licensed in Arizona.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Arizona
If you don't own a car, Arizona law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. MVD says drivers without a vehicle need a non-owner policy for their SR-22. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Arizona SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Arizona?
Arizona's MVD usually requires one after a DUI suspension or revocation (including extreme and aggravated DUI), refusing an alcohol or drug test, a suspension for driving without insurance, an accident in a vehicle you own that had no insurance, or an unpaid court judgment from a crash. If you aren't sure, check your record on AZ MVD Now or ask a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Arizona?
Typically 3 years from the date your suspension or revocation ends, not from the date of the offense. For an unpaid judgment, you keep it as long as the judgment stands and for 2 years after it's paid. MVD removes the requirement on its own when your time is up.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Arizona?
Your insurer has to tell MVD if the policy cancels or lapses, and MVD can suspend your license right away until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Arizona without a car?
Yes. Arizona law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, and MVD says that's what you need if you don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
