How SR-22 works in Maryland
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate an insurance company files with a state to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Maryland doesn't use it for its own drivers, even after a DUI. Instead, insurance companies report your coverage to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) electronically. When the MVA asks for proof, your insurer gives you an FR-19, Maryland's insurance certification, which is good for 30 days. If another state told you to file an SR-22, that state's requirement may still apply, so ask that state or a licensed agent.
- Your insurer reports your coverage to the MVA and must give you an FR-19 for free when the MVA asks for proof
- Keep coverage on every registered car with no gaps. If it lapses, the MVA suspends the registration and charges $200 for the first 30 days, then $7 a day, up to $3,500 per lapse in a 12-month period
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Maryland minimum car insurance
Maryland requires at least $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage, often written as 30/60/15. Policies also need uninsured motorist coverage of at least the same amounts and $2,500 of personal injury protection (PIP), which the policyholder can waive in writing. Your policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner insurance in Maryland
If you don't own a car, some insurers sell a non-owner policy in Maryland, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. It can also carry an SR-22 if another state requires one. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Maryland SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Maryland?
Maryland doesn't require SR-22 filings for its own drivers, even after a DUI. The MVA tracks insurance electronically and uses its own FR-19 form when it needs proof. You may still need an SR-22 if another state requires one, for example after an offense there. Ask that state or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Maryland?
Maryland has no SR-22 time period. If another state requires one, that state sets the length. In Maryland, what matters is keeping coverage on every registered vehicle with no gaps.
What happens if my insurance lapses in Maryland?
The MVA suspends the vehicle's registration and charges $200 for the first 30 days, then $7 a day, up to $3,500 per lapse in a 12-month period. You have to return the plates when the MVA tells you to, or it can suspend your license too. If you're dropping coverage on a car, return the plates first.
Can I get non-owner insurance in Maryland?
Yes. Some insurers sell non-owner policies in Maryland, which cover your liability when you drive a car you don't own. A licensed agent can quote one.
