How SR-22 works in Indiana
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files electronically with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Indiana usually requires one after an OWI suspension (Indiana's name for DUI), failing or refusing a chemical test, or a suspension for not having insurance. After an OWI or chemical test suspension, you typically keep it for 3 years from the date the suspension ends. After a suspension for not having insurance, you keep it for 180 days in a row.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the BMV electronically for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to notify the BMV at least 10 days ahead, and your license can be suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Indiana minimum car insurance
Indiana requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/25. The property damage minimum was $10,000 until it rose to $25,000 on July 1, 2018. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Indiana
If you don't own a car, an operator's (non-owner) policy covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own, and Indiana's BMV recognizes it. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Indiana SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Indiana?
The Indiana BMV usually requires one after an OWI suspension, failing or refusing a chemical test, a suspension tied to a court-ordered alcohol and drug program, or a suspension for not having insurance, such as when you can't show proof of insurance after a crash or a ticket. An unpaid court judgment from a crash can require one too. Your BMV notice tells you what you need.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Indiana?
After an OWI or chemical test suspension, typically 3 years from the date the suspension ends. After a suspension for not having insurance, 180 days in a row. If you aren't sure of your dates, check your driver record with the BMV.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Indiana?
Your insurer has to file a cancellation notice (SR26) with the BMV at least 10 days before the policy ends, and the BMV suspends your license until a new SR-22 is on file or your required time is up. During an insurance suspension, a lapse puts the suspension back in place. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Indiana without a car?
Yes. Indiana's BMV recognizes an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
