How SR-22 works in Georgia
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) to prove you carry the coverage Georgia requires. Georgia uses it in a few specific cases. DDS requires an SR-22 to reinstate a license suspended for a DUI conviction, and a second or later conviction for driving without insurance requires an SR-22A, Georgia's paid-in-full version. You keep it for 3 years from the date of conviction. A first no-insurance conviction needs proof of insurance, not an SR-22.
- Your insurance company or agent sends the SR-22 or SR-22A to Georgia DDS for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it's canceled, your insurer has to tell DDS at least 30 days ahead, and DDS can cancel your license
- A licensed agent can quote it today and file one when Georgia, a court or another state requires it
Georgia minimum car insurance
Georgia requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/25. After a DUI conviction, Georgia requires higher limits for 3 years: at least 50/100/50 after a first DUI and 100/300/100 after a second or later one, and your SR-22 has to show them.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Georgia
If you don't own a car, Georgia DDS accepts a non-owner SR-22 or SR-22A policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Georgia SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Georgia?
Under a DDS rule that took effect in September 2025, you need an SR-22 to reinstate a license suspended for a DUI conviction. A second or later conviction for driving without insurance requires an SR-22A, which starts with a policy paid in full for 6 months. If you were uninsured in a crash and post security with DDS to avoid a suspension, you also file an SR-22A. A first no-insurance conviction needs proof of insurance, not an SR-22. If you aren't sure, ask Georgia DDS or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Georgia?
Typically 3 years from the date of conviction, for a DUI or a second or later no-insurance conviction. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask Georgia DDS.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Georgia?
Your insurer has to send DDS a cancellation notice at least 30 days before the policy ends, and DDS can cancel your license. Separately, Georgia insurers report car policies to the Department of Revenue, which can charge a lapse fee and suspend your registration. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Georgia without a car?
Yes. Georgia DDS accepts a non-owner SR-22 or SR-22A policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle, and after a second no-insurance conviction DDS says drivers without a car must buy one. A licensed agent can quote one.
