How SR-22 works in Illinois
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Illinois Secretary of State to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Illinois usually requires one after a license revocation, such as for a DUI conviction, after a suspension for a crash without insurance or for an unpaid court judgment from a crash, or after 3 or more convictions for driving without insurance. You typically keep it for 3 years.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the Illinois Secretary of State for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies the Secretary of State and your license is suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Illinois minimum car insurance
Illinois requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/20. Illinois auto policies also have to include uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least the 25/50/20 limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Illinois
If you don't own a car, Illinois law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. The Secretary of State says to file an operator's SR-22 if you don't own a vehicle. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Illinois SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Illinois?
The Illinois Secretary of State usually requires one after a license revocation, such as for a DUI conviction, even a first one. It's also required after a suspension for a crash without insurance, a suspension for an unpaid court judgment from a crash, or 3 or more convictions for driving without insurance. If you aren't sure, ask the Secretary of State's office or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Illinois?
Typically 3 years. Renew the policy at least 45 days before it ends so your filing doesn't lapse. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask the Secretary of State's office.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Illinois?
Your insurer has to notify the Secretary of State at least 15 days before the policy cancels, and your license is suspended until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Illinois without a car?
Yes. Illinois law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, and the Secretary of State says that's the SR-22 to file if you don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
