How SR-22 works in Missouri
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Missouri usually requires one to reinstate your license after a DWI or other alcohol-related suspension or revocation, a points suspension or revocation, or an unpaid accident judgment, and you typically keep it for 2 years from the date the suspension or revocation started. After a no-insurance suspension, you keep proof of insurance on file for 3 years from the date you can reinstate, and it has to be an SR-22 if there was an accident.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the DOR Driver License Bureau for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to notify the DOR at least 10 days ahead, and your license can be suspended again
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Missouri minimum car insurance
Missouri requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. The property damage minimum was $10,000 until it rose to $25,000 on July 1, 2019. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Missouri
If you don't own a car, Missouri law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. The DOR says a driver who needs an SR-22 and doesn't own a vehicle must get non-owner SR-22 coverage. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.
