How SR-22 works in Washington, DC
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) as proof of financial responsibility, showing you carry at least the District's minimum coverage. DC usually requires one after a conviction for DUI or impaired driving, leaving the scene of a crash, aggravated reckless driving or a felony involving a vehicle, and the DMV can also ask for one before it reinstates a revoked license. The DMV says to keep it for 3 years from the date of conviction.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the DC DMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. Insurers report cancelled policies to the DC DMV, and without proof on file your license and registration can be suspended again
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Washington, DC minimum car insurance
DC requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries and $5,000 for property damage (with a $200 deductible). A 2026 law raises both sets of limits to $50,000, $100,000 and $20,000 starting October 1, 2027. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least the limits in effect.
