How SR-22 works in Colorado
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate from your insurance company that goes on file with the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Colorado usually requires one to reinstate after a DUI or other alcohol-related revocation, refusing a breath or blood test, a conviction for driving without insurance, or a suspension after a crash without insurance. You usually keep it for 3 years. After a first alcohol offense with no crash and a BAC under 0.15, the DMV may only require it for the 9-month revocation period.
- Your insurance company gives you the SR-22 when you buy the policy. You can upload it to the DMV at myDMV.colorado.gov or mail it with your reinstatement application
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it lapses, your insurer notifies the DMV, and your license is suspended for that reason alone
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Colorado minimum car insurance
Colorado requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/15. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Colorado
If you don't own a car, Colorado law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Colorado SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Colorado?
The Colorado DMV usually requires one to reinstate after a DUI, DWAI or other alcohol-related revocation, refusing a breath or blood test, a conviction for driving without insurance, or a suspension after a crash without insurance. You also need one for a probationary (work) license after a points suspension. Your DMV notice tells you what you need.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Colorado?
Usually 3 years. After a conviction for driving without insurance, it's 3 years from the date of the conviction. After a first alcohol offense with no crash and a BAC under 0.15, the DMV may only require it for the 9-month revocation period. Your DMV notice gives your exact requirement.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Colorado?
Your insurer notifies the DMV, and the DMV suspends your license for that reason alone until a new SR-22 is on file. If you switch companies, get the new SR-22 filed before the old one ends.
Can I get an SR-22 in Colorado without a car?
Yes. Colorado law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
