How SR-22 works in Texas
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Texas usually requires one after a DWI, a drug offense, driving with an invalid license, or several convictions for driving without insurance, and you keep it for 2 years from your most recent conviction.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with DPS for you. DPS can take up to 21 business days to process it
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it lapses, your license can be suspended again, and you'll need a new SR-22 and a $100 reinstatement fee
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Texas minimum car insurance
Texas requires at least $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, known as 30/60/25 coverage. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Texas
If you don't own a car, Texas lets you meet the SR-22 requirement with a non-owner policy. It covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.
