How SR-22 works in Idaho
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Idaho usually requires one after a conviction that suspends your license, such as DUI, reckless driving or leaving the scene of an injury crash, or after a conviction for driving without insurance. After a suspension you typically keep it for 3 years, starting the day the suspension ends.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with ITD for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies ITD and your license can be suspended until you file a new SR-22 for the rest of your period
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Idaho minimum car insurance
Idaho requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Idaho
If you don't own a car, Idaho law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Idaho SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Idaho?
Idaho usually requires one after a conviction that suspends or revokes your license, such as DUI, reckless driving, eluding police or leaving the scene of an injury crash. A conviction for driving without insurance also requires one. After your insurer files it, you can confirm it with ITD's free online status check.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Idaho?
After a suspension or revocation, 3 years starting the last day of the suspension. After a first conviction for driving without insurance it's 1 year, and 3 years for a second conviction within 5 years.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Idaho?
Your insurer has to tell ITD at least 10 days before the policy ends, and ITD can suspend your license for not keeping proof of insurance. You'd need a new SR-22 for the rest of your period. Line up a new one before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Idaho without a car?
Yes. Idaho law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
