How SR-22 works in Louisiana
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files electronically with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Louisiana requires one to reinstate your license after a DWI conviction or after refusing a chemical test, and before it lifts a suspension for an unpaid court judgment from a crash. The OMV says to keep it for 3 years from the date of conviction for a DWI, or 3 years from the date of arrest for a test refusal.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the OMV electronically for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. Your insurer has to notify the OMV before a certified policy ends, and the OMV can suspend your license and registration until new proof is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Louisiana minimum car insurance
Louisiana requires at least $15,000 for injuries per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 15/30/25. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits. Driving uninsured costs more than fines: under Louisiana's No Pay, No Play rule, as changed in 2025, an uninsured driver can't collect the first $100,000 for their own injuries or the first $100,000 for property damage after a crash, even one someone else caused.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Louisiana
If you don't own a car, Louisiana law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. After a DWI or test refusal, Louisiana law also asks for proof that covers you as a driver, not just your vehicles. Ask the agent how your policy should be set up.

Louisiana SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Louisiana?
The Louisiana OMV requires one to reinstate your license after a DWI conviction (including underage DUI) or after refusing a chemical test. It's also needed before the OMV lifts a suspension for an unpaid court judgment from a crash. A ticket or lapse for no insurance usually needs proof of current insurance and fees, not an SR-22. If you aren't sure, ask the OMV or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Louisiana?
Typically 3 years. The OMV counts from the date of conviction for a DWI and from the date of arrest for a test refusal. For an unpaid judgment, ask the OMV how long your proof has to stay on file.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Louisiana?
Your insurer has to tell the OMV before a certified policy ends, and the OMV can suspend your license and registration until new proof is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Louisiana without a car?
Yes. Louisiana law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
