How SR-22 works in Montana
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the Montana Department of Justice to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Montana requires one when the MVD revokes your license, for example after a fourth DUI (a felony), negligent homicide with a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash where someone was hurt, or being declared a habitual traffic offender. You typically keep it for 3 years from the date the MVD requires it.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Montana MVD for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to notify the MVD at least 10 days before, and you can lose your license again until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Montana minimum car insurance
Montana requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/20. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Montana
If you don't own a car, Montana law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Montana SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Montana?
Montana ties the SR-22 to a revoked license. The MVD revokes a license after a fourth DUI (a felony), negligent homicide with a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash where someone was hurt or being declared a habitual traffic offender (30 or more points in 3 years), and it won't restore the license or issue a probationary license until an SR-22 is on file. A first DUI is a 6-month suspension rather than a revocation, so if you aren't sure whether you need an SR-22, ask the MVD or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Montana?
Typically 3 years from the date the MVD requires it, and the MVD releases it only if you've had no new convictions in that time that could suspend or revoke your license. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask the MVD.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Montana?
Your insurer has to tell the MVD at least 10 days before the policy ends, and you can lose your license again until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Montana without a car?
Yes. Montana law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
