How SR-22 works in Michigan

An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate an insurance company files to prove you carry at least a state's minimum coverage, and Michigan doesn't use it for most suspensions, even after drunk driving (called OWI in Michigan). The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) asks for a filed certificate of insurance mainly when a court judgment from a crash goes unpaid. Your license and registration stay suspended until the judgment is paid, or until you agree to pay it in installments and keep that proof on file. The SOS can release the proof 3 years after it was first required.

  • Your insurance company sends the certificate of insurance to the SOS for you. An insurance application isn't accepted in its place
  • Keep the policy active the whole time. If the proof on file stops meeting the law, the SOS can require new proof
  • A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options

Michigan minimum car insurance

Michigan is a no-fault state. Policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020 carry bodily injury liability of $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident unless you choose lower limits in writing, and the lowest choice is $50,000 and $100,000. Policies also include $10,000 of property damage liability for crashes in other states, property protection insurance (PPI) of up to $1 million for damage your car does to other people's property in Michigan, and personal injury protection (PIP). You pick your PIP medical level: unlimited, $500,000 or $250,000, or a lower option if you qualify through Medicaid, Medicare or other health coverage.

No car? Non-owner insurance in Michigan

If you don't own a car, Michigan law defines an operator's policy that covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own, and the SOS accepts one for a financial responsibility filing. It covers liability only, not full no-fault benefits. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Michigan SR-22 questions

Who needs an SR-22 in Michigan?

Michigan doesn't use SR-22 filings for an OWI or for driving without insurance. The SOS asks for a filed certificate of insurance mainly when a court judgment from a crash goes unpaid. If another state told you to file an SR-22, that state's rule may still apply, so ask that state or a licensed agent.

How long do I need proof on file in Michigan?

At least until the judgment is paid. The SOS can release the proof 3 years after it was first required, as long as there's no unpaid judgment, pending lawsuit, crash in the past year or new conviction.

What happens if I drive without insurance in Michigan?

It's a misdemeanor with a fine of $200 to $500, up to 1 year in jail, or both. If you can't show proof of insurance when asked, the SOS can suspend your license for 30 days or until you show proof, whichever is later.

Can I get non-owner insurance in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan law defines an operator's (non-owner) policy, and the SOS accepts one for a financial responsibility filing. It covers liability only. A licensed agent can quote one.
