How SR-22 works in Connecticut

An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Connecticut doesn't require one automatically after a DUI. The state dropped that rule in 2004. The DMV can still require one when it decides your driving record calls for it, for example after certain traffic violations or repeat violations within 12 months, including driving without insurance. If it does, you can ask the DMV to remove the requirement after 12 months.

  • Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Connecticut DMV for you
  • Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to notify the DMV at least 10 days ahead, and your license or registration can be suspended until new proof is on file
  • A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options

Connecticut minimum car insurance

Connecticut requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/25. These limits apply to policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2018. Before that, the minimums were $20,000, $40,000 and $10,000. Every Connecticut policy also has to include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.

No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Connecticut

If you don't own a car, Connecticut law recognizes an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Connecticut SR-22 questions

Who needs an SR-22 in Connecticut?

Connecticut doesn't require one automatically after a DUI, reckless driving or leaving the scene of a crash. The state dropped that rule on July 1, 2004. The DMV can still require one when it decides your driving record calls for it, for example after certain traffic violations or repeat violations within 12 months, including driving without insurance. Your DMV notice tells you what you need. If you aren't sure, ask the DMV or a licensed agent.

How long do I need an SR-22 in Connecticut?

Connecticut law doesn't set one fixed length. After 12 months, you can apply to the DMV to remove the requirement, and the DMV decides whether to lift it. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask the DMV.

What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Connecticut?

Your insurer has to tell the DMV at least 10 days before the policy is cancelled or ends, and the DMV can suspend your license or registration until new proof is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.

Can I get an SR-22 in Connecticut without a car?

Yes. Connecticut law recognizes an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
