How SR-22 works in Kansas
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Kansas Department of Revenue's Division of Vehicles to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Kansas law requires one after a conviction for DUI, driving while suspended or revoked, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident or another serious violation, and after a suspension for not having insurance. You typically keep it on file for 1 year.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Kansas Division of Vehicles for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to notify the state right away, and your license can be suspended again
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Kansas minimum car insurance
Kansas requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. Kansas is a no-fault state, so every policy also needs personal injury protection (PIP): at least $4,500 for medical bills, $900 a month in lost income for up to 1 year, $4,500 for rehabilitation, $25 a day for in-home help for up to 1 year and $2,000 for funeral costs. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Kansas
If you don't own a car, you still have to keep insurance on file. Kansas law says the requirement applies whether or not you own a vehicle. A non-owner policy covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Kansas SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Kansas?
Kansas law requires one after a conviction in Kansas or another state for DUI, driving while suspended or revoked, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide or a felony involving a vehicle. A suspension for not having insurance also requires one. A guilty or no contest plea counts as a conviction. If you aren't sure, ask the Division of Vehicles or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Kansas?
Typically 1 year. Your notice from the Kansas Division of Vehicles tells you when your filing period starts. Keep the policy active with no gaps the whole time.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Kansas?
Your insurer has to notify the state right away when the policy ends, and the state treats that as having no insurance. Your license can be suspended again. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Kansas without a car?
Yes. Kansas law says the insurance filing applies whether or not you own a vehicle, and a non-owner policy is the usual way to meet it. A licensed agent can quote one.
