Does Massachusetts use the SR-22?

Not for its own drivers. Every car registered in Massachusetts must carry Massachusetts compulsory insurance, and your insurance company reports your policy straight to the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). After an OUI (Massachusetts' name for a DUI), a refused chemical test or a conviction for driving without insurance, the RMV suspends your license, and you get it back by finishing the suspension and meeting the RMV's reinstatement steps. There is no SR-22 to file. An SR-22 only comes up if another state needs one from you, for example after a DUI in that state or an SR-22 order from a state you moved from.

  • Your insurance company reports your Massachusetts policy to the RMV for you
  • If your policy is cancelled and you don't replace it, the RMV sends a notice and then revokes your registration
  • Need an SR-22 for another state? A licensed agent can tell you which companies can file it there

Massachusetts minimum car insurance

Massachusetts requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person and $50,000 per accident, $30,000 for property damage, $8,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) per person, and uninsured auto coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. These limits apply to policies written or renewed since July 1, 2025. Before that, the liability minimums were $20,000, $40,000 and $5,000.

No car? Non-owner insurance in Massachusetts

If you don't own a car, ask the agent about a non-owner policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Not every company sells one in Massachusetts. If you own a car registered here, it needs its own Massachusetts policy.

Massachusetts SR-22 questions

Does Massachusetts require an SR-22?

Not for its own drivers. Your insurance company reports your Massachusetts policy to the RMV, so there's no SR-22 to file. After an OUI, a refused test or driving without insurance, the RMV suspends your license, and you get it back by finishing the suspension and meeting the RMV's reinstatement steps.

What if another state wants an SR-22 from me?

That state's rules still apply, even if you live in Massachusetts. For example, a DUI in another state can bring an SR-22 order there. Ask a licensed agent which companies can file an SR-22 with that state for you.

What happens if my insurance is cancelled in Massachusetts?

Your insurance company tells the RMV. If you don't get new coverage or cancel your registration in time, the RMV sends a notice and then revokes your registration, and you pay a fee to reinstate it.

What happens if I drive without insurance in Massachusetts?

A conviction brings a fine and a 60-day license suspension. A second conviction within 6 years brings a 1-year suspension.
