How SR-22 works in Ohio
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Ohio usually requires one after a non-compliance suspension for driving without insurance or not showing proof of it, after a judgment suspension for an unpaid crash judgment, or after a 12-point suspension. Since April 9, 2025, you typically keep it for 1 year from the date the BMV suspends your license. Cases on your record before that date can need 3 or 5 years.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the Ohio BMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to tell the BMV and your license can be suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Ohio minimum car insurance
Ohio requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/25. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Ohio
If you don't own a car, Ohio law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Ohio SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Ohio?
The BMV usually requires one after a non-compliance suspension, which comes from driving without insurance or not showing proof of it at a traffic stop or crash. A judgment suspension for an unpaid crash judgment and a 12-point suspension also require one. After a first OVI (Ohio's name for a DUI), the BMV asks for proof of insurance to reinstate. If you aren't sure, check your BMV notice or ask a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Ohio?
Since April 9, 2025, typically 1 year from the date the BMV suspends your license. Cases on your record before that date can need 3 or 5 years. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask the Ohio BMV.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Ohio?
Your insurer has to tell the BMV at least 10 days before the policy ends, and the BMV can suspend your license until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Ohio without a car?
Yes. Ohio law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
