How SR-22 works in Wyoming
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with Driver Services at the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Wyoming usually requires one after a DUI (called DWUI in Wyoming), reckless driving or another conviction that suspends or revokes your license, after a conviction for driving without insurance, or after a suspension for a crash without insurance. You typically keep it for 3 years from the date WYDOT requires it.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with WYDOT Driver Services for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies WYDOT and your license and registrations can be suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Wyoming minimum car insurance
Wyoming requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/20. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Wyoming
If you don't own a car, Wyoming law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Wyoming SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Wyoming?
WYDOT usually requires one after a DUI (called DWUI in Wyoming), even a first offense, or after reckless driving, leaving the scene of an injury crash or another conviction that suspends or revokes your license. A conviction for driving without insurance also requires one, and so does a suspension for a crash without insurance once it starts. If you aren't sure, ask WYDOT Driver Services or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Wyoming?
Typically 3 years from the date WYDOT requires it. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask WYDOT Driver Services.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Wyoming?
Your insurer has to tell WYDOT at least 10 days before the policy ends, and WYDOT can suspend your license and registrations until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Wyoming without a car?
Yes. Wyoming law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
