How SR-22 works in Oregon

An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Oregon usually requires one after a DUII or another conviction that suspends your license, such as reckless driving or hit and run, a crash while driving uninsured, or a conviction for driving uninsured. After a DUII or similar suspension you typically keep it for 3 years from the day your license is reinstated. After an uninsured crash or a conviction for driving uninsured, it's 1 year.

  • Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with Oregon DMV for you
  • Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies DMV and your license can be suspended until a new SR-22 is on file
  • A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options

Oregon minimum car insurance

Oregon requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage, plus $15,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) per person and uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. These limits have been in place since January 1, 2010. After a DUII conviction, your SR-22 has to show higher injury limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for 3 years.

No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Oregon

If you don't own a car, Oregon still requires the SR-22, and the law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Oregon SR-22 questions

Who needs an SR-22 in Oregon?

Oregon DMV usually requires one after a DUII, a crash while driving uninsured (for the driver and the vehicle's owner), a conviction for driving uninsured, or a conviction for certain other traffic crimes such as reckless driving, hit and run or eluding police. You also need one to get a hardship permit. If you aren't sure, ask DMV or a licensed agent.

How long do I need an SR-22 in Oregon?

After a DUII or another suspension or revocation for a traffic crime, 3 years starting the day your license is reinstated. After an uninsured crash or a conviction for driving uninsured, 1 year. That shorter period started January 1, 2026; before then it was 3 years.

What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Oregon?

Your insurer has to tell DMV within 10 days after the policy is canceled. If a new SR-22 isn't filed, DMV suspends your license until one is, and you'd also pay a reinstatement fee. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.

Can I get an SR-22 in Oregon without a car?

Yes. Oregon requires the SR-22 even if you don't own a vehicle, and it accepts an operator's (non-owner) certificate. A licensed agent can quote one.
