SR-22 in Kentucky: what Kentucky requires

An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate an insurance company files with a state to prove you carry at least that state's minimum coverage. Kentucky works differently from most states: it usually doesn't ask for an SR-22, even after a DUI. To get your license back or get an ignition interlock license, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks for a regular proof of insurance card instead. You may still need an SR-22 if another state requires one, for example after a ticket or suspension there or if you moved here owing one. In that case it's filed with that state, and that state sets how long you keep it.

Kentucky minimum car insurance

Kentucky requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, or a single limit of $60,000. Kentucky is a no-fault state, so every car policy also needs $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP), which Kentucky calls basic reparation benefits. A 2026 state law kept that $10,000 but raised the lost-wage limit inside it to $500 a week and the funeral limit to $5,000 for policies issued or renewed after it took effect.

No car? Non-owner insurance in Kentucky

If you don't own a car, a non-owner policy covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. It's also a common way to meet an SR-22 that another state requires. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Kentucky SR-22 questions

Does Kentucky require an SR-22?

Usually not. Kentucky doesn't list an SR-22 among its DUI reinstatement requirements, and its ignition interlock license asks for a regular proof of insurance card. You may still need an SR-22 if another state requires one. If you aren't sure, check your notice or ask the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet or a licensed agent.

What happens if I drive without insurance in Kentucky?

Kentucky can revoke your vehicle registration, and you can face a fine of $500 to $1,000, up to 90 days in jail, or both. Insurers report active policies to the state every month, so a lapse shows up.

I owe an SR-22 to another state. Can I get it in Kentucky?

Usually, yes. Many insurance companies can file an SR-22 with another state for a Kentucky driver. That state decides how long you keep it. A licensed agent can check your options.

Can I get insurance in Kentucky without a car?

Yes. A non-owner policy covers you when you drive a car you don't own, and it can carry an SR-22 if another state requires one. A licensed agent can quote one.
