How SR-22 works in California
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a form your insurance company files with the California DMV to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Drivers usually need one after a DUI, a license suspension, or getting caught driving uninsured, and after a DUI California requires it for 3 years.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the DMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it lapses, the insurer tells the DMV and your license can be suspended again
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
California minimum car insurance
California's minimum liability coverage is $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for injuries to more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in California
If you don't own a car but need an SR-22 to get your license back, a non-owner policy is often the simplest way to meet the requirement. It covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.
