How SR-22 works in Washington
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Washington usually requires one after a DUI, reckless driving or another offense that suspends or revokes your license, an accident while you were uninsured, or an unpaid court judgment from a crash, and you typically keep it for 3 years from the date you're eligible to reinstate your license.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with DOL for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer has to tell DOL at least 10 days ahead, and DOL suspends your license again until a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Washington minimum car insurance
Washington requires at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. These limits have been in place since 1980 and did not change in 2025 or 2026. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits and come from a company authorized to sell insurance in Washington.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Washington
If you don't own a car, Washington law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

Washington SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Washington?
The Washington Department of Licensing usually requires one after a DUI, reckless driving, too many traffic tickets or another offense that suspends or revokes your license, an accident while you were uninsured, or an unpaid court judgment from a crash. Your DOL suspension letter tells you what you need to reinstate.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Washington?
In most cases 3 years from the date you're eligible to reinstate your license, not from the date of the offense. If you aren't sure of your dates, ask DOL.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Washington?
Your insurer has to tell DOL at least 10 days before the policy ends, and DOL suspends your license again until a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Washington without a car?
Yes. Washington law allows an operator's (non-owner) policy for drivers who don't own a vehicle. A licensed agent can quote one.
