How SR-22 works in Maine
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), part of the Secretary of State, to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Maine usually requires one after a conviction for driving without insurance, an OUI conviction (Maine says OUI, not DUI), a crash when you had no insurance, or an unpaid court judgment from a crash. The BMV can also ask for one after other motor vehicle convictions. You keep it for at least 3 years after your license is reinstated.
- Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the BMV for you, online or by fax
- Keep the policy active the whole time. Your insurer has to notify the BMV at least 10 days before a certified policy ends, and your license can be suspended again until new proof is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Maine minimum car insurance
Maine's minimums are higher than most states. It requires at least $50,000 for injuries per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, plus $2,000 of medical payments coverage. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage has to be at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident too. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Maine
If you don't own a car, Maine law recognizes an operator's (non-owner) policy, which covers your liability when you drive a car you don't own. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.
