How SR-22 works in Iowa
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to prove you carry at least the state minimum coverage. Iowa usually requires one after an OWI (Iowa's name for a DUI) revocation, including for failing or refusing a chemical test, after another conviction that suspends or revokes your license, or after an unpaid court judgment from a crash. You typically keep it for 2 years from the first day of your suspension or revocation.
- Your Iowa-authorized insurance company files the SR-22 with the Iowa DOT for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies the DOT and your license and registrations can be suspended again
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
Iowa minimum car insurance
Iowa requires at least $20,000 for injuries per person, $40,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage, often written as 20/40/15. A bill to raise these limits was proposed in 2025 and 2026 but did not pass. Your SR-22 policy has to meet at least these limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in Iowa
If you don't own a car, Iowa allows an operator's (non-owner) SR-22, which lets you drive a car you don't own as long as its owner carries liability insurance. It doesn't let you register a vehicle. With a regular owner's SR-22, you can only drive and register the vehicles listed on it. Ask the agent which one fits your situation.

Iowa SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in Iowa?
The Iowa DOT usually requires one after an OWI revocation, including for failing or refusing a chemical test, after a habitual violator or other conviction-based suspension or revocation, or after an unpaid court judgment from a crash. You also need one on file to get a temporary restricted license. A zero tolerance revocation for drivers under 21 doesn't require one. Your DOT notice tells you what you need.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Iowa?
Typically 2 years from the first day of your suspension or revocation. If you have more than one, the 2 years run from the start of the last one that requires an SR-22.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in Iowa?
Your insurer files a cancellation notice with the DOT, and the policy can't end until at least 10 days after that. If you don't file a new SR-22, your license and registrations are suspended again. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in Iowa without a car?
Yes. Iowa allows an operator's (non-owner) SR-22. It lets you drive a car you don't own if that owner has liability insurance, but you can't register a vehicle with it. A licensed agent can quote one.
