How SR-22 works in New Hampshire
An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prove you carry at least the coverage the state requires. New Hampshire doesn't make most drivers buy car insurance, but the DMV does require an SR-22 after any DUI (called DWI in New Hampshire), leaving the scene of a crash, a second reckless driving conviction or another serious driving offense, and sometimes after a crash without insurance. The DMV tells you in writing. You typically keep it for 3 years from the date of the conviction, crash or DMV action that required it.
- Your insurance company or agent files the SR-22 with the New Hampshire DMV for you
- Keep the policy active the whole time. If it ends, your insurer notifies the DMV, and your license and registration are suspended 20 days after the DMV's notice unless a new SR-22 is on file
- A licensed agent can quote it today and explain your options
New Hampshire minimum car insurance
New Hampshire doesn't require most drivers to carry car insurance, but you must be able to pay for damage you cause in an at-fault crash. A policy behind an SR-22 needs at least $25,000 for injuries per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written as 25/50/25. New Hampshire car policies also include at least $1,000 of medical payments coverage and uninsured motorist coverage that matches your liability limits.
No car? Non-owner SR-22 in New Hampshire
If you don't own a car, the New Hampshire DMV accepts an operator's SR-22, which insures your license and your right to drive. It doesn't let you register a vehicle. Ask the agent whether it fits your situation.

New Hampshire SR-22 questions
Who needs an SR-22 in New Hampshire?
New Hampshire doesn't require most drivers to carry insurance, but the DMV requires an SR-22 after any DUI (called DWI in New Hampshire), leaving the scene of a crash, a second reckless driving conviction, or a homicide or assault conviction from driving. Repeated speeding can also require one, including two or more speeding tickets in a youth operator's first two years, and so can some crashes without insurance. The DMV tells you in writing. If you aren't sure, ask the DMV or a licensed agent.
How long do I need an SR-22 in New Hampshire?
Typically 3 years from the date of the conviction, crash or DMV action that required it. After a second DWI, it's 3 years from the date you're eligible to get your license back. When your time is up, ask the DMV in writing to review your record and release you.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses in New Hampshire?
Your insurer notifies the DMV when the policy ends, and the DMV sends you a notice that your license and registration will be suspended 20 days later unless a new SR-22 is on file. Line up a new SR-22 before you switch companies.
Can I get an SR-22 in New Hampshire without a car?
Yes. The DMV accepts an operator's SR-22 for drivers who don't own a vehicle. It covers your right to drive, but you can't register a vehicle with it. A licensed agent can quote one.
